Johann Baptist Homann
49 x 58 cm
A handsome map of Great Britain and Ireland with superb original hand colouring and one of the most florid title cartouches available on a folio map of Britain.
Geographically and stylistically, the map is derived from Nicholas Visscher II’s map of Great Britain, published c. 1695; this map also bears a large, elaborate cartouche with a royal portrait but in this case, it is William of Orange or William III. Homann’s map bears a close geographical resemblance to the aforementioned piece but he has re-designed the cartouche, illustrating the current monarch Anne I and adding putti and an allegorical figure representing Europe pointing towards the English coat of arms.
The example offered here is the second state of the plate and the last to bear the portrait of Anne. The first state, issued in c.1707 does not bear the two verses from Ovid on the banner to the right of the portrait.
