This map illustrates the Asian portion of Ney Elias’s epic journey from Peking to Nizhny Novgorod in western Russia.
This map covers Elias’s journey from Peking, through the Gobi Desert in Mongolia, and his arrival in the town of Biisk in the Tomks Oblast in Russia. Elias recorded detailed scientific notes on his journey which he summerised in a lecture and article for the Royal Geographical Society. He received the Founders Medal of the Society for his achievements.
Although never confirmed, modern analysis also suggests that he may have been an important agent during the Great Game, the hidden struggle for power and influence in Asia between Russia and Great Britain during the 19th century.
