A Map of the Colony of Rhode Island: with the adjacent Parts of Connecticut, Massachusets Bay & c
Revolutionary War era map focusing on the area central to the Battle of Rhode Island in August of 1778, the first time American troops were joined by their French allies.
The map was commissioned from Thomas Kitchin and included in the London Magazine in the latter half of 1778. It centres on Rhode Island, with surrounding areas of Massachusetts and Connecticut.
Militarily, the battle was inconclusive although the British had been besieged and forced the American forces to retreat. In turn, the Americans were joined by their French allies for the first time.
The map shows much for the road network connecting Boston to other major towns in the area, particularly Bristol and Newport in Rhode Island.
