This map was drawn to illustrate part of the Theater of War during the Russo-Turkish War of 1768-74. Russia had made great inroads into modern Rumania and for the first time in history, a Russian fleet had entered the Mediterranean. This encouraged the Maniot or Orlov Revolt by Greeks against Ottoman forces. Although it began in the Peloponnese, it soon spread to northern Greece, hence the need for this map. Although crushed fairly quickly, the Revolt is perceived by Greek historians to be an important step towards independence finally achieved in the 1830s.
