The map was published to illustrate the snap election held after the defeat of the Government of Ireland Bill and reflects a victory of the Conservatives under Lord Salisbury who were joined by a breakaway Unionist wing of the Liberal Party led by Joseph Chamberlain and Lord Hartington. This election marked an ascendancy of for the Conservative Party which lasted until the end of World War II.
