Jacques-Nicolas Bellin
18 x 29 cm
This is one of the earliest commercially available maps of the city and originally issued in Raynal's "Histoire des Voyages", a vast multi volume compendium of voyages of exploration and geography. It focuses on French discoveries and their influence although it grew to encompass the whole world.
Bellin would continue to use this map again in a reduced format to illustrate his Petit Atlas Martime in 1764 and this plate was used by several other European publishers to illustrate their own versions of the Histoire des Voyages.
