Homann Heirs
48 x 57 cm
This new shape of the continent is based on the calculations of Johann Matthias Hase, a professor of mathematics at the University of Wittenberg and a famous astronomer and geographer. Further information is obtained from Leo Africanus, a North African traveller and diplomat who was captured by the Spanish and sent to the court of Pope Leo X. Africanus converted to Christianity and, in 1526, wrote the authoritative account of travels in Africa until the 19th century. Both these sources are credited on the cartouche.
