Vincenzo Coronelli
46 x 61 cm
As expected from someone as learned as Coronelli, he quotes multiple classical sources for his map of the ancient world, including Strabo, Pliny and Ptolemy. He also cites a couple of more obscure sources, Marinus of Tyre and Artemidorus, the author of the "Oneirocritica", a five volume treatise on the interpretation of dreams. He was also a dedicated traveller in Asia Minor.
As usual with Coronelli's work, the map is masterfully engraved and the decoration is the same as the illustrated borders surrounding his modern double hemisphere world map; the illustrations show the signs of the zodiac.
