The Irish Free State was a short-lived political entity which was established in 1923 and ceased to exist in 1937. It was technically a Dominion of the British Empire but to all intents and purposes became self governing after the Statute of Westminster in 1931 when it was also internationally recognised as a state.
It was a pre-cursor to the Irish Republic and the main political parties of the modern Republic can trace their roots to this era.
Due to its short life, contemporary maps showing the Irish Free State are not common.
