Girolamo Ruscelli
20 x 26 cm
Published by Ruscelli in Venice in his 1599 edition of Ptolemy's "Geographia", the fourth such edition by Ruscelli. First written around 150AD by the Greco-Roman scholar Claudius Ptolemy, "Geographia" was a foundational text for the study of geography. Its translation and reintroduction into western Europe during the Renaissance provided the basis for early European mapmaking. Many of the earliest European atlases were composed entirely of maps based on coordinates compiled over a thousand years earlier by Ptolemy and his pupils.
