Robert Syer Hoggar
175 x 127 cm
This is
generally acknowledged to be the finest large scale 19th century
plan of Oxford. It updates the Georgian plans of Isaac Taylor and Richard
Davies and reflects the new development of the city, particularly in the north.
Hoggar’s plan shows the newly built areas of St. Ebbs and St. Thomas’s. The
northern development mentioned above is the area from St. Giles Church to
Marston Road.
Hoggar’s
plan was further used as a model and template for succeeding plans of the city
for decades after its issue.
Decoratively,
the plan bears a large cartouche with multiple calligraphic styles. [OXON571]
