A detailed and important folding map of New Zealand based on surveys by the Colonial Office. The earliest examples of this map date to the 1840s, but this later edition has been updated to show the progress of railway construction up to circa 1876. Though not perfect in its distinction between completed and planned railways, the majority of the red lines marked on the map correspond to railways completed before 1877. These include railways from Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Napier, Dunedin, and Invercargill, amongst many others.
The map also features several inset maps showing parts of the country in greater detail, including an early town plan of Wellington and a plan of Victoria, a settlement near modern-day Waitangi which was never built.
