Late 19th century of Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Singapore and Papua New Guinea, corresponding to South East Asia.
This map is based on a map of the same area initially published by John Arrowsmith in his atlas of 1834. Stanford and Arrowsmith collaborated commercially in the latter's later years which culminated in Stanford's firm ultimately buying the cartographic plates from Arrowsmith's firm upon his retirement.
The map shows the same area, bears the same insets of Labuan Island and Singapore and the narrative panel about the island's acquisition from the Sultan of Johore. However, it has been substantially updated: the network of undersea telegraphic cable has been added, as has the geo-political aspect of this map, showing European possessions and spheres of influence.
