The Negeb or Desert south of Beersheba
A meticulously detailed survey map of the Negev desert in southern Israel, with parts of Palestine and the Egyptian border. Surveyed in 1913-14 on behalf of the Palestine Exploration Fund by Captain Stewart Francis Newcombe's expedition, with assistance from C. Leonard Woolley and T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia). The expedition was publicly just an archaeological survey of the region, but in secret they were gathering information for the British army in anticipation of a war with the Ottoman Empire. The survey was used extensively through the First World War and into the British Mandate period in Palestine, and it remained the most detailed map available of this region for decades afterwards. This example was printed in 1921 by the War Office during the Mandate Period.
Roads, railways, borders, wells, ruins, palm trees, telegraph offices, light houses, rivers, marshes, and many other features are painstakingly mapped. Water features, such as rivers and wells are printed in blue, making them easy to discern from the rest of the map. There is also a large text box containing information about the rivers, roads, archaeology, supplies, and tribal groups of the area.
