London Magazine
26 x 18 cm
This is one of a pair of maps illustrating an article in the London Magazine which details General Burgoyne’s campaign in the area which is now New York State during the American Revolutionary War.
This is the southern section of the state from New York City and Long Island to Albany, centralizing on the Hudson River. There is an extraordinary amount of detail on the maps, aided by surveys from reports of Burgoyne’s army as well as other sources, not least the maps published by the London Magazine’s great rival, the Gentleman’s Magazine, who issued a series of important revolutionary war maps in their 1776 volume.
As well as being of interest to scholars of the American Revolution, these maps are some of the most accurate of the region at the time. The engraver was the notable map maker, Thomas Kitchin.
