The survey was based on the work of Huot and Demidoff. The latter was a fabulously wealthy Russian aristocrat, Count Anatoly Nicolaievich Demidov, First Prince of San Donato, who organised a scientific expedition into southern Russia and the Crimea 1837-38. The results were published in four volumes in 1840-2 and the whole project cost then half a million French Francs. Jean Jacques Huot was a French cartographer attached to the expedition responsible for compiling the manuscript maps. He was particularly well known for his geological maps.
This map was present in Fullarton's "Gazetteer of the World" a vast, multi volume geo historical dictionary copiously illustrated with both maps and prints.
