Christoph & Johann Christoph Weigel
33 x 40.6 cm
This elaborate plan places particular emphasis on its enormous city walls, no doubt due to its strategic importance during the War of the Spanish Succession. The distinctive star shaped fortifications had their origins in the 16th century while under Spanish rule.
The plan is based on a smaller map first issued in 1697 by Anna Beek and Gaspar Baillieu. However, Weigel increased its size and developed it considerably, adding interior detail, street names as well as several important buildings. The nomenclature inside the city is a curious mixture of French and German.
The map was later used as a basis for an even larger map by Matthias Seutter, in the 1730s.
