The shape of the peninsula was taken from the much earlier maps originally published by the firm of Arrowsmith and based on the information compiled by Carsten Niebuhr. However, the map incorporates the new information provided by the major new survey performed by Guy and Brooks for the British East India Company between 1819 and 1829. Therefore, the Qatari Peninsula is now present on the map while there are substantially more place names in that area than previously. These include "Abothubbee" (Abu Dhabi) and "Debai" (Dubai) as well as Sharjah. Further detail around the Oman coast is provided by the new discoveries of Wellsted. Further north, Kuwait is shown under its alternate older name of "Grane".
An interesting, attractive map. Original colour. [MEAST4917]
