Nicolas & Guillaume Sanson
20.3 x 25.4 cm
Late edition of Sanson’s quarto map of Tartary first issued
in the mid 17th century. This version is distinguished by its
flamboyant and vibrant original colour. Issued by F. Halma in Amsterdam.
Sanson’s original map is important due to its departure from
the Dutch model as illustrated by Blaeu, Jansson and Hondius. Those maps were
broadly based on Mercator. Sanson drew a new map, drawn from new sources, particularly
Ottoman and Arabic geographers.
Original colour. [AS1294]
