Nicolas Sanson
19 x 25 cm
Several maps in this work diverge drastically from Sanson’s usual style, being far more reminiscent of Dutch maps from several decades earlier. The map of Africa has been tentatively attributed to Pierre Mariette, Sanson’s publisher but not based on his map. Rather, it was based on the map of Jodocus Hondius’s II map of Africa published 1613. This small map certainly bears a greater resemblance to the maps by Hondius as opposed to Sanson’s small map of Europe. [EUR1554]
