Theodore De Bry
28 x 20 cm
A scarce early map of Sri Lanka (Ceylon) from De Bry's important account of the East Indies. The map contains little geographic detail and is adorned by elephants, sea monsters, and many fictional cities. Kandy, Colombo, and Negombo are all identifiable, and a large stupa ('Pagoda Grande') is illustrated in southern Sri Lanka. This example is from a German edition of De Bry's work.
