John Thomson
52 x 61 cm
Geographically, this map is broadly based on John Cary's map of 1806 which covers the same area but in greater detail. Conversely, the size, scale and sparsity makes this map easy to read and gives it an aesthetic grandeur.
Maine is still a District with an unsettled northern border while Vermont is shown with its western border running along the eastern shore of Lake Champlain. The towns of Bennington, Chester, Fulham and Brattleboro, now in Vermont, are shown in New York State.
An extremely interesting map showing the new United States as state borders were being debated and settled.
