This interesting little map has been issued at the time of the first great westward expansion of the United States. Following the recent tensions with Great Britain which culminated in the War of 1812, in its aftermath, the US has rapidly expanded into what are today the mid-western States of Ohio, Indiana and the Territory of Illinois. North of Illinois is the still undefined North West Territory. These mid-western States show their early borders, most notably showing Illinois without access to Lake Michigan. Successful lobbying by Nathaniel Pope changed the status of this border to allow Illinois access to the Lake shortly after the publishing of this map.
In the south, the Adams Onis Treaty gained Florida for the United States. The border was rapidly changed split the vast Mississippi Territory into the Alabama and Mississippi Territories and give them access to the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. This map is slightly out of date as Alabama and Mississippi gained statehood in 1819 and 1817 respectively.
