Sebastian Münster
25 x 19 cm
It is a reduction of the wall map issued by Cornelis Anthonisz, known in less than ten examples in institutions. Due to its publication in 1550, it is the earliest available printed map of the city.
Sebastian Munster was one of the most influential cartographers of the mid-16th century. He is famous for his 1540 edition of Ptolemy's Geographia and his own Cosmographia, published in 1544. Both works went into several editions, in Munster's lifetime and beyond.
The reverse of the map bears an image of Desiderius Erasmus, one of the foremost Dutch theologians of his time.
