This early woodcut of the Levant coast and Cyprus initially appeared in the 1550 edition of the "Cosmographia".
It is not known which maps Munster used as a source but it is known that his own researches focused on studies of the Bible. He also corresponded widely with fellow scholars and geographers before the first issue of his "Cosmographia" in 1544. The two panels of text on the front are accounts of the history of the region, mainly based on Biblical studies.
