Sebastian Münster
28.5 x 16.5 cm
Early wood-cut map of the Italian Mediterranean island of Sardinia, This is the earliest printed map map of Sardinia, first issued in Munster's "Cosmographia" in 1554.
The reverse of the map bears a brief description of Sardinia by Sigismondo Arquer, a famous figure in the island. He was a sixteenth century lawyer, theologian and intellectual who was burnt at the stake for heresy (he was a Lutheran) in Toledo in 1571. He has been identified as the source for the map of Cagliari for Munster's "Cosmographia", therefore it is highly likely he may have also provided the sources for this map of Sardinia.
