Josiah Whitbread
72 x 83 cm
The source for this map, as stated in the title, was the Ordnance Survey. Whitbread adapted the OS maps for his own commercial purposes, starting in 1867. His maps must have been a commercial success as there were at least eight different "states" or editions of this London map. Whitbread was active in London to around 1879, when he retired and sold his stock to the publishers George Philip and Son, who later began to issue his maps under their imprint. Curiously, this map is precisely dated 1883 in the lower-right corner and was not published in London, but rather in Sheerness, Kent. This suggests that Whitbread did continue printing and selling this map, at least for a short time, after he left London and retired to the Kentish coast.
