Sanyu Takashiba
71.1 x 141 cm
Takashiba was a map publisher active in Edo (modern Tokyo) from the mid 19th century to approximately 1879. His output primarily focused on highly detailed maps of Edo (Tokyo) though he is also recorded to have produced maps of both Japan and maps of Japanese provinces.
This map of Japan is believed to have been first issued in c.1848 and although generally conforming to traditional Japanese cartography, it does incorporate some European innovations. As usual with Japanese cartography, it is exquisitely engraved with typically attractive calligraphy on remarkably sturdy paper. The colouring was done by hand at the time and is extremely bright and attractive.
Original colour. Small repairs on fold intersections. [SEAS5519]
