Gerard van Keulen
51 x 59 cm
Glorious example of van Keulen's chart of the Shetland Islands. The map is oriented to show north to the right.
The basis of this map can be traced back to the map issued by Henricus Hondius in 1636, which was one of two maps on the same sheet, the other being the Orkney Islands. Van Keulen has augmented and re-oriented this version to show north to the right. Although geographically, the maps are very similar, there are small differences in the shape of the islands, particularly the island of Yell, which suggests that some revision was done.
The inset on the lower left details Bressay Sound, a new addition taken from the map by Greenville Collins first issued in 1693.
This example is in particularly fine original colour. [SCOT1836]
