Matthäus Merian
28 x 36 cm
Strong impression of Merian's map of Italy, based on Blaeu's map.
This map was issued in Merian's great work, the "Neuwe Archontologia Cosmica", a geographical description of all the kingdoms in the world. The text was written by Johann Ludwig Gottfried while the maps, views and panoramas were provided by Matthaus Merian the Elder. The work was highly influential and went through numerous editions, many of the posthumous. The work contains a collection of panoramas which often depict important cities in their 17th century glory. The maps were often based on the work of Willem and Joan Blaeu, although Merian adapted their work, reducing the maps in size and often reducing the ornamentation.
