Matthew Carey
20 x 25 cm
The map extends westwards, speculatively, to Lake of the Woods and Lake Winnipeg. Only a rough depiction of the rivers, lakes, and mountain ranges of these unknown western regions are included on this early map.
This map was published in both Warner & Carey's rare atlas of 1812 and in a gazetteer atlas by Richard Brookes from the same time period. This is typical for early American mapmaking, there being a great deal of cooperation between American cartographers in the decades after Independence. This example was printed in "Brookes's General Gazetteer Improved" in Philadelphia and Richmond.
