Francois Soules
28 x 38 cm
Revolutionary War plan of the relative positions of the British and American forces during the Siege of Yorktown.
This French map showing the positions of British and
American forces in the siege of Yorktown was issued in a work by Francois
Soules, the “Histoire des Troubles de l’Amerique Anglaise”, a history of the
Revolutionary War. It was first issued in 1785 but was not illustrated. A
second edition was issued in 1787, this time illustrated with a few maps and
with several helpful edits and additions by Thomas Jefferson.
The source for this specific map has been traced to a
manuscript drawn by Guillaume Querenet de la Combe, a French officer and second
in command of the French Engineers. He was present at Yorktown. His map is part
of the Rochambeau collection in the Library of Congress. [USA9879]
