Henry Cuthbert Tunison
31 x 24 cm
A colourful map of the Arctic regions at the end of the 19th century showing the most recent discoveries, including Lt. Greely's furthest north in 1882. The routes of several other expeditions are also noted, such as Nordenskiold in 1878 and the failed American expeditions on the USS Jeanette and the Polaris.
Tunison's atlas is known as a transitional atlas as it combines the vibrant colour and decorative borders of mid-19th century American maps with the printing techniques and design elements of the 20th century.
