This large and spectacular map of Scandinavia is one of Herman Moll's finest maps. The five illustrations to the right of the map provide curious and amusing details about the way of life of the Laplanders, including an early depiction of a man on skis and a reindeer-drawn sledge. Also depicted are Lutheran upright burials, a wedding procession, methods for carrying children in pouches, winter and summer garments, and a herder instructing his reindeer by whispering to it.
Another large inset map shows Svalbard (Spitzbergen) and the northern coast of Norway. It is based on the account of J. Peterson, a pilot with years of sailing through this region. The inset mentions that Svalbard, or 'Greenland' as it is incorrectly named on the map, is not inhabited, but is frequently visited by Dutch, English, and German fishermen and whalers. Elsewhere on the map, the route of King Charles XI's scientific expedition from Upsala to Tornio at the northern tip of the Gulf of Bothnia is recorded.
