Matthäus Merian
28 x 36 cm
This map is fundamentally based on the view issued by Braun and Hogenberg in their "Civitates Orbis Terrarum", the first atlas dedicated to cities. Although the work in full was published between 1572 and 1617 in six volumes, their map of Naples was included in the first volume of 1572. Their primary source was Antonio Lafreri's magnificent map of the city issued in 1566.
Merian has revised his version of the map, though adding the extensive development of the port around the Tower of San Vincenzo, which included a large landfill area, the construction of a new docking bay and the rebuilding of the Tower which had fallen in 1624. Merian also reduced the plan to adapt it for his work, the "Archontologia Cosmica".
