Matthäus Merian
28 x 36 cm
This is a reduced version of Braun and Hogenberg's plan of the city, first issued in their "Civitates Orbis Terrarum" in 1572. The "Civitates" was the first atlas dedicated to urban plans and was published between 1572 and 1617 through six volumes. The original source for the plan is believed to be a now lost map by Antonia Lafreri.
Merian reduced his version and adapted it to his work, the "Archontologia Cosmica".
Strong impression. [IT3637]
