Merian used the plan of the city first issued by Georg Braun in his "Civitates Orbis Terrarum", the first atlas dedicated to city maps. It was present in Volume IV of the work, published in 1588. Merian reduced the plan and adapted it for his own work, the "Archontologia Cosmica".
