Matthäus Merian
25 x 29 cm
This map is based on the celebrated map drawn by the artist Francesco Vanni in the 16th century. Vanni was a very well known religious artist and the large original map bears a magnificent vignette on the upper border depicting several saints. This map, in various formats, became the main source for plans of Siena, including works by Mattheo Florimi and Wenceslas Hollar, who engraved it for Abraham Hogenberg while in Cologne.
The version published here in Merian's "Archontologia" has been reduced in size and adapted, changing the location of the key as well as the splendid coat of arms on the lower left.
Strong impression. [IT3641]
