Matthäus Merian
22 x 33 cm
Birds-eye view of the city of Angra on Terceira Island of the Azores. Depicts mountainous areas, forts, churches, an agricultural plots, as well as vessels at the dock and in movement.
This map is based on Hugo van Linschoten's famous map of the settlement engraved by Johannes van Doetecum in 1595. It was the finest and most detailed plan of the city. Linschoten had been shipwrecked on the Azores on his way back from Goa and spent two years in Angra.
This very finely engraved map has been reduced and adapted to Merian's own publication, the "Archontologia" but in all other respects, remains the same as the larger map above.
Strong impression. [AFR6449]
