This stretch of the Atlantic coast is colloquially known as the Skeleton Coast due to whale and seal bones accumulated on the shore from whaling, and later due to the skeletal remains of shipwrecks caused by the region's thick sea fog and offshore rocks. Curiously, along the coast, there are islands named Plumpudding Island and Roast Beef Island.
