Christopher & John Greenwood
134 x 162 cm
Magnificent folding wall map of London with contemporary colour. Christopher and John Greenwood's map of London is widely considered to be one of the grandest maps of the city ever produced. Based on a new survey undertaken by the Greenwoods themselves, the map features a level of detail never before achieved. This accuracy is combined with expert copper-engraving and exquisite decorative elements to produce a true masterpiece.
Beyond its beauty, the map shows the city during a particularly significant period of expansion at the end of the Regency Period. Considerable development can be seen occurring in north and east London, as well as in the formerly separate villages of Fulham and Chelsea. There are two large vignettes of Westminster and St. Paul's Cathedrals in the lower corners and an imposing title in the upper-right containing a dedication to King William IV.
First edition. Original hand-colour. [LDN6974]
