Map of Africa showing the political boundaries at the start of the 20th century. First published in 1861, this map was frequently updated to reflect new discoveries and political changes. The most noteworthy addition to this edition is that it shows the Orange River Colony as part of British South Africa. The Orange Free State was annexed by the British in 1902 at the end of the Second Boer War, and it remained a colony until 1910 when it became the Orange Free State Province of the Union of South Africa.

Colour is used to distinguish which European colonial power controlled each region: Britain is pink, France is green, Germany is purple, Portugal is yellow, and Spain and Italy are outlined in grey/brown.
