A fascinating folding map showing the goldfields surrounding Johannesburg and Pretoria, published in the midst of the Witwatersrand Gold Rush. Farms outlined in red are those with payable gold finds, whilst areas outlined and coloured in red are government granted mining leases. These are numbered according to an index in the upper-right corner of the map. The owners of each lease, the size of the property, and the length of the lease term are also listed in that same index. Johannesburg is marked on the map as a very small town, though it would increase rapidly in size during and after the gold rush.
Even though this map was surveyed by the Surveyor General's Office in Pretoria, it was not published in South Africa. Instead, the survey was sent to London to be printed and published by Edward Weller.
