Alexander Keith Johnston
51 x 61 cm
Updated re-issue of New South Wales and Victoria. The map was first issued in 1840 but this edition bears greater detail and updates to the infrastructure and settlement.
The Johnston map was based on John Arrowsmith's map of the same region who in turn compiled it from his work in the Royal Geographical Society. The R. G. S. would have received the information directly from the explorers mentioned in the lower right corner or from the Colonial Office. The map no longer marks the gold diggings in Victoria but does bear much greater detail in the region around Melbourne including the completion of the "New Road" between Sydney and Melbourne.
