One map shows the area from Canton, now Guangzhou and the other shows the province of Shandong. Of particular interest is the new course of the eastern part of the Yellow River. Due to catastrophic floods between 1851-5, the course of the river was completely altered from a southern angle to a northern angle, sparking enormous social unrest and change.
The author, Gabriel James Morrison was a Member of the Institute of Civil Engineers and was invited to work on the first railway line in China between Woosung and Shanghai. He established a successful engineering business in Shanghai and travelled widely through the country. He developed a fascination for the history, course and hydrography of the Yellow River about which he wrote several articles.
