Humphrey Phelps
41 x 74 cm
This is one of the more decorative of a series of plans of New York City produced by Phelps and his competitors as guides to visitors to the city. It is decorated with several steamers and provides guides to locations in panels on the left border and the lower right. The map is oriented to show south to the left of the map. To the right, the map extends as far north as 131st Street.
As these pieces were ephemeral in nature, they were printed on thin, inexpensive paper which degenerated quickly. On this example, this degeneration has been stabilised by Japanese tissue which has been used to back the map.
