Johann Baptist Homann
49 x 58 cm
A handsome map of Great Britain and Ireland with one of the most florid title cartouches available on a folio map of Britain. Geographically and stylistically, the map is derived from Nicholas Visscher II’s map of Great Britain, published c. 1695. Visscher's map also bears a large, elaborate cartouche with a royal portrait but on that map it is King William III. Homann’s map bears a close geographical resemblance to Visscher's, but the cartouche has been updated to feature the current monarch, Queen Anne.
The example offered here is the second state of the plate and the last to bear the portrait of Anne. The first state, issued in c.1707 does not bear the two verses from Ovid on the banner to the right of the portrait.
