A rare map of Hong Kong, Macao, and the mouth of the Pearl River, published shortly after the end of the First Opium War, as a result of which Hong Kong was ceded to the British. A large inset map focuses on the British naval assault on Guangzhou (Canton) in greater detail. It also lists and places the nine Royal Navy ships involved in the battle and their captains. Various British and French military positions are marked on the larger map as well, including the track of HMS Nemesis in 1841.
This map was published to illustrate a history of the First Opium War from the perspective of the Nemesis, titled "Narrative of the Voyages and Services of the Nemesis from 1840 to 1843". The ship's captain, William Hutcheon Hall, became famous for his naval victory at the Second Battle of Chuenpi, earning himself the nickname 'Nemesis Hall' and becoming a household name back in London.
