The earliest recorded example of this splendid map of the Parish of Kensington, showing much of the area as undeveloped fields and farmland.
Geographically, the map extends from Kensal Green Cemetery to the Fulham Road in the north to the south while east to west, it shows the Royal Crescent on Holland Park Avenue to Sloane Street. An inset on the lower left shows the detached part of the parish, consisting of Chelsea Hospital and its gardens.
This separately issued plan must have been extremely successful as it was issued multiple times between 1846 and 1879 with the later editions tracking the changes in the Parish. Additionally, it was used by several other map makers. The interest in this earliest edition is the record of the very beginnings of the development of Kensington.
