Striking map encompassing South East Asia, India and part of China and Japan. Adorned with several ships and a small sea monster on the east.
This map is closely based on Willem and Joan Blaeu's map of the same region published c.1632. They in turn used a map printed by Hessel Gerritz, the second official cartographer to the Dutch East India Company. It was the most current map of the region available to the Dutch.
Merian reduced the map in size and removed a large dedication on the lower right to the governor of Batavia (Djakarta). Several ships are shown around Indonesia, hinting at Dutch trading activity while more ships are shown around Japan, again reflecting Dutch trading activity on the island.
